Repairing the Magna-Latch Series 2 child-proof gate latch

In very cold weather the latch can freeze in place. Attempting to pull the knob up by force will cause the magnetic catch to separate from the internal mechanism. At that point, there's nothing for it but to dismount the entire assembly, repair it and remount it.

Tools required:

• A slender flat-head screwdriver or similar long tool with a flat end, for prying the magnetic catch off the striker plate
• Masking tape to mark the position on the post
• No. 2 Phillips-head screwdriver (for a total of three screws)
• A knife, to pry the cap from the knob
• Thread, any kind, a foot or two
