Disassembling the latch

     

  1. Unscrew the two half-inch sheet-metal screws from the bottom of the latch assembly and remove it from the body. Don't lose the spring.
  2. Gently, so as not to damage it, pry the cover off the knob with a knife, exposing the top of the stem.
  3. Pull the stem out and slip off the retaining ring. Be careful the stem doesn't slide back into its channel and get lost inside.
