Reattaching the magnetic catch
- Tie a thread to the top of the stem to prevent it from falling into the channel and out the bottom.
- Slide the top bushing off the stem.
- Carefully lower the stem enough so the bottom mechanism protrudes below the body but no further. Secure the thread, perhaps by winding it around the body.
- Insert the magnetic catch into the bottom piece, slip the spring over it.
- Gently spread the grasping arms just enough to slip in the top of the catch. Pull the spring over the bottom of the arms; pushing with the bottom piece can help.
- If you were unfortunate enough to break the tabs at the ends of the grasping arms, fellow latch-fixer Karl Fosburg has a solution for that, too.
